Amazing Learning Vacation. The instruction was exceptional and responsive to the specific needs of each guest. The accommodation is lovely - we stayed in a deluxe room in the main building, which is gorgeously designed. Dormitory accommodation is also available. There is a communal kitchen for those who want to cook, and lots of places to pick up local fruits and groceries.
There are also eateries and restaurants galore to visit if cooking on vacation isn't your thing. Special shout-outs to Christian, Ivan and Estoban surfing , Lida Spanish , Alejandra and Catalina Yoga , Maria housekeeping and Kirsten admin for making it a wonderful learning vacation for all of us. Awesome classes, great area, and most importantly amazing community and staff. I originally booked my stay for 4 weeks at the school and I ended up staying 2 months! I stayed in a shared room, and everything was clean and well-maintained.
When it comes to the classes at SOTW, I never thought I'd surf a day in my life, and I've completed 8 weeks of surfing with the school now. Before you hit the water, an instructor will go over popping up on your board, staying safe in the water and with your board, and setting your expectations for your surf experience. About half way through the week, one of the guys films the students surfing, and then everyone gathers later to watch the video and an instructor goes over mistakes and how to improve your surfing. The instructors were absolutely fantastic; they gave great advice and were very encouraging.
I felt safe every moment surfing with them, and my surfing overall improved greatly under their instruction. The school takes pride in employing great people who love what they do, and it really shows. Carlos in particular was an amazing instructor to work with. I had surf and photography with him, and I found that he's very knowledgeable and passionate with both. Getting to learn from him was a highlight of my trip for sure! Also, bring sunscreen and bug spray. Pura vida.

Big hug from all of us. Ray wrote a review Jan A magical stop out from your ordinary life. At a somewhat advanced aged I did not know whether or not I would be able to fulfill a long time goal of learning to surf, but the wonderful, caring, and patient instructors at the School of the World worked with me on technique and movement so that after some frustrating attempts I was able to first get up on a surfboard and then under their skilled instruction advance eventually to a feeling of competence.
One of the really wonderful aspects of learning to surf at School of the World was how supportive everyone in the community was with one another. The instructors set the tone.

You would constantly see them cheering for students that were a few waves down in the lineup working with others instructor, when one or another of us would catch a good way. The weekly video surf analysis sessions were another expression of the same community support. I remember the first time in those sessions that I was actually able to get up on a board after much struggle, and how happy everyone was for me.
This feeling of community extends to the whole experience of being at School of the World — — students do classes in surfing and Spanish and photography together and go out with each other to eat, listen to music, take excursions. It is such a powerful experience to step in to this feeling of community, with people from literally all over the world. While the environment is impressive, there is much more to tempt visitors to Costa Rica.
