After the dynamic, light-induced physiological measurements performed here, we can unequivocally conclude that the lightinduced stimulus causes a reversible change in crystal orientation.
It is however conceivable that the change in orientation is triggered by a change in tissue osmolarity.
The physical mechanism evolved by the neon tetra fish, produces tunable photonic crystals controlled by changing the tilt of the crystal arrays. Such light-triggered tunable systems are still out of reach in industrial materials. The insight gained from the neon tetra may thus provide inspiration for the design of optical applications such as in band-pass filters and in distributed Bragg reflectors.
